| BAAP
2006, Edinburgh
This year's meeting is dedicated
to Peter Ladefoged
Hosted by the
Speech Science Research Centre, QMUC
for the British Association of Academic Phoneticians
Where is the conference? Not
at QMUC! BAAP is to be held in the conference centre
nestled right inside "Pollock Halls of Residence"
just to the west of Arthur's Seat, next to the Royal Commonwealth
Pool. See below for links to maps, travel and so on.
Final registration by
Monday 3rd April. The early registration
period is now over. Please now remember the £20 extra
for late registration.
Registration
- As ever, we aimed to keep costs as
low as possible. Here is a link to the registration form
(pdf
or doc).
Please email BAAP2006@qmu.ac.ukwith an electronic version
and send your credit card signature or cheque by post to
one of the organisers, or send the whole thing by post.
Programme
- Here
is the overall programme. This contains times of sessions,
and times, titles and authors of oral papers. What a terrific
programme it is! The posters look fabulous too. Posters
are on Tuesday, and the allocation of authors to sessions
and the titles are here in the poster
programme.
Important Dates
- Abstracts due December 9th.
- Decision December 21st.
- Early registration March 17th.
- Final registration by April 3rd please.
- Conference Mon 10th to Wed 12th April
2006.
Venue
Accommodation
- Bed and breakfast accommodation on
a night-by-night basis will be available at Pollock Halls
(Holland House and Chancellor's Court) on a limited basis,
so please try to book early, direct with Edinburgh First.
http://www.edinburghfirst.com/accommodation/accommodation-index.asp
Accommodation will be even less available at Pollock after
the conference (i.e. the night of the 13th), but should
be fine for the weekend beforehand.
- "Newington" is the local
area in Edinburgh, and there are a large number of B&B
hotels within easy walking distance of Pollock. See the
local map,
where Pollock is the maze of dotted roads.
- The Old Town is also not far if you
want to stay in the centre of town at one of the larger
hotels in the thick of it.
Travel
- Waverley station is the closest to
Pollock Halls. The airport bus comes into the centre of
town outside Waverley station.
- We'll try to work out what the best
bus is: if you want to have fun, check out the bus map here,
where "Commonwealth Pool" is right next to Pollock.
(Why not bring your cozzie?) The buses going through "Newington"
are very close by, on Minto Street, as you can see from
the geographically accurate map.
- Edinburgh street names change regularly
down the length of the street, so beware.
Presentations
Poster presenters will of course be
able to present audio material at their board, if they bring
portable equipment to do so. The poster boards will be in
portrait format: your poster will need to fit into the size
available. An overall size of Portrait A0 (841mm wide x 1189mm
high) is ideal. More information on fixing posters later,
but please rememember that fixing a large number of individual
sheets of paper takes a long time, so we recommend using a
smaller number of larger sheets even if you are not able to
use A0 or A1 size.
For oral presentations we encourage the use of powerpoint
with audio examples. We will provide a laptop PC to present
from, running Windows. We emailed oral presenters on 3rd April
with slightly more specific instructions, but please get in
touch with questions. We will allow 15 minutes for talks,
with 4 minutes for questions, and have a very tight schedule.
Prizes
- The Eugenie Henderson Prize. This
prize will be awarded by a vote of members to the best first
presentation (oral or poster) to BAAP.
- The Peter Ladefoged Prize.
In addition to the established Eugenie Henderson Prize,
this year there will be special prize for the presentations
which in the view of the judging panel best captures the
spirit of Peter Ladefoged's research.
Organising Committee for BAAP2006
