Sports Facilities


Queen Margaret University Sports Centre offer a range of facilities to staff, students and the general public. We provide a safe, friendly and informative environment for our customers so you can enjoy your chosen sport to the full. Our staff, who are trained to a high standard, endeavor to provide you with a high quality service and are happy to assist with any questions you may have.


Facilities
Our facilities include:

- astroturf suitable for 5-a-side or 7-a-side football
- sports hall - 4 badminton court sized
- outdoor gym - installed September 15

Summer Teen Gym

Are you bored and looking for something to do this Summer?!

If you’re 12—15 years old, why don't you ‘COMMIT TO GET FIT' with Queen Margaret University's Teen Gym.

Join Teen Gym and you’ll get:

• An induction on your first visit

• Fully supervised gym sessions

• Use of gym, Astroturf & Sports Hall

• Fun weekly exercise programme to follow

Fitness Industry Qualifications

QMU Sports are delighted to announce that we will be delivering Fitness Industry Qualifications in collaboration with the EnergyWise Academy. We will be offering Level 2 Gym Instructor, Level 3 Personal Trainer and Indoor Cycling so why not come along and get your career started with us.

The EnergyWise Academy is renowned for its down to earth, realistic approach when applying the theory of qualifications to existing practical skills. We know the fitness industry ‘inside out’ and also appreciate that it is forever changing and evolving.

What makes our training course different?

  • Small class numbers – eight maximum – ensuring you get personal attention
  • We place a huge amount of emphasis on the practical element of this course …working within a gym is crucial and no amount of home-study can replace this.
  • Access to your tutor between units/weekends via email

  • Face to face learning with encouragement and feedback helps you to earn more quickly
  • We have a reputation for bringing theory to life

We know our stuff! All of our tutors have extensive experience of training clients, Indoor Cycling, Circuits and Personal Training.

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym Based (QCF)

Entry pre-requisite: As this is an entry level qualification no previous experience or qualification is required, however a basic understanding of health & fitness would be helpful. Ideally personal experience of training in a gym environment would also be useful.

Indoor Cycling
Unit no 1 & 2 Saturday & Sunday  9.30- 5-30pm 25th & 26th June 2016

Cost : £250
Venue: Queen Margaret University, Queen Margaret Drive, Musselburgh, EH21 6UU
Entry pre-requisite: a suitable Level 2 Fitness Instructing qualification, e.g. Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (QCF) Gym or ETM. Some experience of studio cycling is useful. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and Learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (QCF) 
Unit 1 Saturday & Sunday  9.30- 5-30pm tbc

Entry pre-requisite: All candidates must have a recognised current Level 2 Fitness Instructing – Gym Based qualification before joining this course. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and application of numbers involved, and learners should have basic skills in communication and application of numbers at Level 2/3.

First Aid Courses

First Aid at Work - Automated External Defibrillator (AED) included

This 3 day course covers a wide range of CPR and First Aid skills. It’s aimed at those who would like to become a qualified First Aider within their workplace, however it is also suitable for those who would like to learn lifesaving and first aid skills. This is a practical course which is fully compliant with the guidelines set out by the HSE for employers on selecting a training provider.

On the course you will learn about the role and responsibilities of a first aider, how to assess an incident, how to manage casualties who are unconscious, including CPR and AED for those not breathing normally, how to manage bleeding, burns and scalds, fractures and injuries as well as how to recognise and manage a casualty suffering from a major illness e.g. Asthma attack, Seizures.

First Aid at Work Renewal - Automated External Defibrillator (AED) included

This course is suitable for you if you are already First Aid at Work qualified and need to renew your certificate.

Cost: £185      QMU Staff, Student or Gym Member: £175

Green Power

Our new equipment, from Life Fitness, has been developed to improve the energy efficiency of QMU, reducing the Carbon Footprint and helping it become a greener facility. Options will include being able to power your own TV on bikes by cycling like Sir Chris Hoy. Such “green” innovation goes hand-in-hand with the Universities Environmental Policies.
