Speech & Hearing Sciences: introduction

Head: Professor Fiona Gibbon MSc PhD DipCST RegFRCSLT

Speech and Hearing Sciences offers degree courses leading to a professional qualification in Speech and Language Therapy or Audiology. We have an excellent record of research, which benefits those of our graduates who move on to a clinical career and those who undertake postgraduate study.

Our research looks at speech, hearing and language disorders in a wide range of client groups, and in the non-clinical population. See the Speech Science Research Centre and the Centre for Integrated Healthcare Research.

We have clinics equipped with CCTV (television), which can be used for demonstration and clinical research purposes. These enable our students to be involved in clinical training, practice and research on-site. There is also a Speech Research Laboratory with a wide range of equipment dedicated to the analysis of speech and disorders of communication. The Speech Research Laboratory is an internationally-recognised centre for research into both normal and disordered speech. These state-of-the art facilities and equipment are also available for teaching.

QMU is one of only 16 universities in the UK offering a recognised degree course towards a career in Speech and Language Therapy. See the RCSLT site for more information.
