Michael Clapham - Research Profile

Michael Clapham, Senior Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition
Michael Clapham is a registered dietician and a registered public health nutritionist. During his earlier career he worked in the NHS as a dietician in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. Latterly he managed Birmingham’s coronary heart disease prevention programme. He also has commercial experience having held the position of Technical Manager at Warbutons Bakers.
For the past 20 years he has worked in the university sector - 16 of those at Queen Margaret University. He currently conducts teaching and cutting research within QMU’s School of Health Sciences.
As a specialist in school meals, Michael was an expert member of the committee that produced ‘Hungry for Success’
– The Scottish Government’s School Meals policy. He is now investigating the effectiveness of the School Meals policy within East Lothian on primary school children and Fife where the focus will be on secondary school children.
Some of his current research projects include an investigation of the nutritional quality of pre-school children’s diets. This work is focuses on children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Edinburgh.
His work with diet analysis has led to his cutting edge development of the use of technology to monitor dietary intake.
