Dr Sandra Drummond - Research profile

Dr Sandra Drummond, Senior Lecturer in Nutrition

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

Dr Sandra Drummondis a registered public health nutritionist with a background in human physiology. She gained a PhD from Glasgow University for her work on energy metabolism and went on to work in a commercial setting for the London based company ‘Fitness for Industry’ before joining QMU as a research fellow in 1994.

Dr Drummond works within QMU’s Faculty of Health Sciences and is currently Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) in Nutrition. She also teaches nutrition to postgraduate students on the MSc Public Health Nutrition programme.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr Drummond’s research focuses on obesity. She is particularly interested in:

  • eating patterns eg the role of snacking and eating frequency in maintaining a healthy body weight;
  • macronutrient content , in particular fats and carbohydrates;
  • maternal obesity and eating behaviour during pregnancy and
  • diet and activity as an effective strategy for weight loss in overweight women.

She has been involved in several large scale intervention trials looking at specific target groups within the community ie overweight middle aged men and individuals with increased cardiovascular risk factors. One area of Dr Drummond’s research has also investigated compliance with healthy eating recommendations.

CONSULTANCY

Queen Margaret University has a range of experts who are available to work with business, research partners and government organisations.

Dr Drummond was an expert nutrition consultant on the free school meals private members’ bill which preceded the Scottish Government’s ‘Hungry for Success’ policy. She has also provided expert nutritional evidence for the Scottish Prison Service in the case of Robert Napier against The Scottish Executive.
