Graduate School - Research Degrees Code of Practice

The Code of Practice for Research Students and Supervisors has two functions.
Firstly, it contains advice on all stages of a research degree. If you are unsure how to approach a situation, the Code of Practice is your first port of call. The Code is supplemented by links to further material wherever possible.
Secondly, it establishes the University's view of good practice and defines expectations in respect of staff and student responsibilities. Although this Code doesn't have the force of regulations, it serves as a reference point in the event of a disagreement.
All research students and supervisors will be deemed to have read both the Regulations and the Code.
The Research Degrees Panel is responsible for formulating policy and setting standards in respect to research degrees. It works to ensure the quality of research degree processes and programmes. Any suggested amendments or additions to the Code should be submitted to the Secretary to the Research Strategy Committe, Lucy Clapson.
The Code is divided into eight sections:
- Facilities and support
- Good research practice
- Supervision
- Progress
- Examination
- Training and personal development
- Professional Doctorates
- PhD by Publication
The Code of Practice should be read in conjunction with the following essential documents:
