RBS Centre for Community Arts Research and Practice

The Centre for Community Arts Research & Practice was launched in October 2004. It grew out of the Community Theatre course and Community Development unit at the School of Drama, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. The Centre is dedicated to developing participatory practice as research and developing continuous professional development opportunities for arts and cultural workers and researchers. Until the opening of the Centre there had been few opportunities in Scotland for arts and cultural workers to engage with continuous professional development or learn from research dedicated to practice.

The Centre programmes events and opportunities at the Gateway Theatre; there are workshops and courses for everyone from 8 to 108. The work engages communities, organisations and facets of society, interculturally and collaboratively through action learning and participative development practice. This is a valuable educational process and working in this way, interwoven with the research practice, it develops a resource to inform social policy. It develops the opportunities for people to step into their power, engage with their own learning and culture and use their work to make changes and critiques to become active citizens and be engaged in cultural development based on authentic work.
