Queen Margaret University is making funds available to support PhD students undertaking research in our areas of specialism. Funding will be allocated through one, university-wide competition. Full details are below:
What does the studentship cover?
Successful candidates will receive:
- full waiver of tuition fees
- an annual stipend of £11,000 for 3 years
- £2000 over the course of the project for expenses and travel
Students would start in September 2010. Funding lasts for 3 years for full-time students, 6 years for part-time.
Research methods training is offered in the first semester but after that there are no taught elements as such - students are expected to manage their own research project, with guidance from a supervisor.

Who can apply?
PhD studentships can only be awarded for candidates willing to undertake research in specific topics as determined by the University and / or funding partners. The full list of topics available this year is here. No scholarships are available for other research projects.
To be eligible for a bursary, the following criteria must apply:
- The applicant meets the standard entry criteria for research degrees.
- The research proposal is in one of the topic areas specified.
- Applicants may apply to study on a part-time or full-time basis, but they must be willing to be resident within reach of Edinburgh.
- Applicants must be willing to study for a full PhD, not an MPhil.
- Applicants may come from the UK or any other country.
Successful candidates are likely to have a good qualification in the relevant topic: either a first class honours degree or a Masters. Dedication, enthusiasm and strong communication skills in both written and spoken English are essential.

International applicants and the SORSAS scheme
International applicants are welcome to apply for QMU studentships. Successful candidates will receive the benefits listed above. Overseas candidates who are shortlisted but are unsuccessful in achieving a full studentship will be considered for SORSAS funding. This covers the difference between home and international fees. Candidates who were offered SORSAS funding would need to find their own source of funds to pay the home fees and to cover living expenses.

(By "self-funded" we mean that you would have to find another source of funds to pay your fees and living costs, as opposed to relying on funding from QMU.)
