Bursary Competition 2009

The bursary competition is now CLOSED. No further funded studentships are available at the moment. The next general competition will be advertised in February 2010.

If you wish to apply to undertake a research degree in a different topic, for an MPhil, or on a non-resident basis, you are welcome to apply for a self-funded programme. Please see How to Apply.

(By "self-funded" we mean that you would have to find another source of funds to pay your fees and living costs, as opposed to relying on funding from QMU.)

More about PhD bursaries (for information only):

PhD studentships can only be awarded for candidates willing to undertake research in specific topics as determined by the University and / or funding partners. The full list of topics available this year is below. No scholarships are available for research projects originated by applicants.

To be eligible for a bursary, the following criteria must apply:

  • The applicant meets the standard entry criteria for research degrees.
  • The research proposal is in one of the topic areas specified.
  • Applicants may apply to study on a part-time or full-time basis, but they must be willing to be resident within reach of Edinburgh.
  • Applicants must be willing to study for a full PhD, not an MPhil.
  • Applicants may come from the UK or any other country.

Successful candidates are likely to have a good qualification in the relevant topic: either a first class honours degree or a Masters. Dedication, enthusiasm and strong communication skills in both written and spoken English are essential.

Bursaries are only available for PhD study based at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. Research methods training is offered in the first semester but after that there are no taught elements as such - students are expected to manage their own research project, with guidance from a supervisor. Bursaries cover all tuition fees and provide help with living costs for three years (the prescribed period of study for a PhD).

The closing date for applications was 18 March 2009. No late applications will be accepted. (How to Apply) The list below is provided purely for information, to give an indication of the types of areas we are interested in supporting.
