Bursary competition 2009
SM16 Articulation, connected speech and social variation in laboratory phonology
Proposals are invited
with an empirical focus on speech production.
Suggested areas of research are outlined below. Applicants should indicate their preferred area of specialism and quote the code SM16 on the application form.
The studentship will be based mainly on articulatory phonetic research, and investigate key theoretical questions in the phonetics/phonology interface from a Linguistic or Psycholinguistic perspective. Full training will be provided in the relevant techniques, such as Electropalatography, Ultrasound Tongue Imaging, or Electromagnetic Articulography. We invite applicants with an interest in pursuing research in topics comparable to those featuring in recent and current research in the Speech Science Research Centre by Scobbie, Lickley, S. Schaeffler, Lawson or Gordeeva.
QMU’s speech laboratories provide a state-of-the-art environment for research into a wide range of phenomena. Potential applicants should contact either of the supervisors for further more detailed discussion of suitable topics, which will be most likely to build on current research in connected speech and sandhi phenomena, the articulatory study of spontaneous speech and discourse, gestural phonology and exemplar theory.
For further information contact Dr Robin Lickley or Professor Jim Scobbie
