The price of a course is dependent on its type. Our undergraduate courses fall into the following catergories:

Please note that our fees and charges are reviewed annually, and in future years are subject to increase.

Important information for Home and EU Students

The fee level for Home/EU full-time students starting courses since 2006/7 will be £1820, while the fee level for full-time students who commenced prior to 2006/7 will be £1285.

PAYMENT OF FEES FOR SESSION 2012/13

The fee levels and other charges detailed here apply to all students who commence or resume their studies in Session 2012/13.

Fee levels quoted are correct at the time of publication. The University reserves the right to amend published fees.

Fee levels are reviewed on an annual basis, and are subject to increase.

Research students in receipt of a studentship do not pay tuition fees or bench fees, but are liable for the examination fee and any continuation fee.

PAYMENT OF FEES (DUE DATE)

Tuition fees and Bench fees (Research students only) become due on the first day of your programme of study. Arrangements for fee payments are detailed below.

International students who have paid a £1000 deposit will have this amount deducted from their overall fees.

21 DAY PERIOD

Within 21 days of the due date, all students must either pay their tuition fees in full, or have arranged with the Finance Office to pay by instalments. If you choose to pay in full within the 21-day period, you may use a cheque, cash, on-line payment through the student portal QM:u, debit card or credit card. Payment may be made in person at the Finance Office, or by sending in a cheque, made payable to QMU. Please put your marticulation number on the back of the cheque and sent it to the Finance Office, QMU, Queen Margaret University Drive, Musselburgh, East Lothian, EH21 6UU. You can also pay over the phone by calling +44 (0)131 474 0000 and asking for 'Finance.'

PAYMENT BY INSTALLMENTS

You may choose to pay tuition fees by instalments, rather than by a single payment. If you choose this option, you must complete a direct debit mandate prior to, or at the time of, matriculation. The number of instalments by which payment may be made will depend on the length and start date of your course. Direct Debits run for 8 months October to May inclusive. Direct Debit payments can only be made from a UK bank account. For all returning students you must renew your Direct Debit each year with a new form.

Students can also make 8 monthly payments (from October to May) by setting up a recurring debit/credit card through the QM:u Student Portal.

PAYMENT BY A SPONSOR

It is a condition of registration that students accept liability for their tuition fees. Remember that even if your fees are to be paid by a sponsor, such as an embassy or employer, it is your personal responsibility to ensure that they are paid and to provide evidence of funding when you matriculate. Where any student has failed to provide written confirmation of funding within 28 days of the start of their programme of study, she/he will be deemed to be personally liable for payment of the fees, and an invoice will be issued to the student accordingly. If your sponsor is a Health Board you must obtain a Purchase Order number from them so this can be quoted on an invoice.

DISCOUNT

For all annual tuition fees of £8,000 and above, where the student is self-funding and the fee is settled in full by 31 October 2012, a discount of 5% will be authorised.

Graduates of the University who hold a verified QMU undergraduate or postgraduate award and who are admitted to a named postgraduate award of QMU in 2012/3 will be eligible for a 10% discount on the published fees.

FEE WAIVER SCHEME FOR PART-TIME STUDENTS

If you are a part-time student, you may be eligible for assistance with your fees through the government’s fee-waiver scheme. This scheme is designed primarily to assist students from low income backgrounds or those in receipt of benefits, to participate in higher education. You will be eligible if you are studying on a part-time basis for a credit bearing first degree. If you already have a first degree, you may still be eligible for a fee waiver to study for another first degree, provided you satisfy other aspects of the criteria, namely that you are Scottish domiciled, and meet at least one of the following conditions:

• your family is in receipt of income support, or working tax credit, or housing benefit, or pension credit, or Income based Job Seekers Allowance;;
• you are in receipt of Severe Disablement Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Carers Allowance, or Attendance Allowance;
• you are a registered job seeker, and have been so for a continuous period of no less than six weeks prior to the date of application;
• your family’s sole income is Department for Work and Pensions’ benefits; or its net income is lower than the threshold for receiving income support.

For the purposes of the fee waiver, the definition of 'family' is: mature single student; married or unmarried couple, a couple in civil partnership; married or unmarried couple or couple in civil partnership with dependant children; or lone parent with dependant children.

Part-time Fee Grant (previously known as the ILA 500)

If you are over 16 and live in Scotland you may be eligible for a part-time fee grant of £500 (previously known as the ILA 500). In order to qualify you must be studying part-time, a minimum of 40 credits and have a personal income of less than £22,000 per annum. This is a Scottish Government scheme that helps you pay for your learning, for more information please see the SAAS website - http://www.saas.gov.uk/student_support/special_circumstances/part_time_dl.htm or contact studentfunding@qmu.ac.uk

You must apply for the part-time fee grant no later than a month after the start date of your course.

Individual Learning Account – ILA 200

If you are over 16 and live in Scotland you may be eligible for funding of up to £200 from ILA Scotland for some of our short courses. This is a Scottish Government scheme that helps anyone who earns less than £22,000 a year to pay for their learning. Your first step is to register with ILA Scotland. For further information see the ILA website http://www.ilascotland.org.uk or contact studentfunding@qmu.ac.uk

For an ILA 200 you must have this funding confirmed by ILA Scotland before you start your course. ILA account details and course information must be given to Karen Inglis, Finance Office Manager as soon as you have matriculated. Once your account has been registered by QMU you will receive a Learning Token from ILA Scotland within 10 working days. This must be signed and returned to Karen Inglis immediately. Failure to comply with ILA conditions may make you liable for the full fees.

PROFESSIONAL & CAREER DEVELOPMENT LOANS

Professional & Career Development Loans (PCDL) are available only to post-graduate students who are studying a vocational course leading to a professional qualification. A PCDL is a personal loan between you and a bank. PCDLs are available through an arrangement by the UK Learning and Skills Council and two high street banks; Barclays and The Co-operative Bank. You can borrow between £800 and £10,000 to help you fund up to two years of learning. The Learning & Skills Council pays the interest on your loan while you are studying and for one month after the end of your course. You then repay the loan to the bank over an agreed period at a fixed rate of interest.

PROFESSIONAL BODY REGISTRATION FEES

Students will be personally liable for payment of any professional body registration fees as detailed in the Registration & Membership fees sections.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The University is pleased to offer up to 20 competitive Scholarships of £1000 for new International students undertaking their first year of study on UG or PG degrees. The scholarship is granted as a reduction of the tuition fee and is available to students who are self-funding with an international fee of more than £8000 for a single year of study. PAYMENT DIFFICULTIES

What happens if a payment is late? Payment of interest on overdue amounts

Unless you have chosen to pay by instalments, if your tuition fee remains unpaid 21 days after it is due, you may become liable to pay interest at 2.5% above the UK clearing bank base rate per annum on the full amount. Interest will run from the due date until the outstanding fees are eventually paid.

If you have chosen to pay by instalments, interest on a late instalment will run from the due date to the date when the instalment is paid.

Difficulties in making a payment

If you are experiencing difficulty in paying all or part of your tuition fees, you must contact the Credit Controller as soon as possible. (Contact details for the Credit Controller are given below). The Credit Controller will help you to draw up a payment schedule, to which you will be required to adhere until your fees are paid in full.

REQUIREMENT TO LEAVE THE UNIVERSITY

Unless you have agreed a payment schedule with the Credit Controller, if tuition fees are still outstanding 8 weeks after the end of the 21-day period or if an instalment is over 4 weeks late, you may be asked to leave the University. The University will put your debt into the hands of a debt collector.

REINSTATEMENT ON PAYMENT OF FULL TUITION FEES

On payment in full of outstanding tuition fees before the end of the academic year in question, the University may permit your reinstatement on your programme of study. However, if you are behind with your studies you may have to repeat parts of the programme, thereby incurring further fees.

PROGRESSION

You will not be permitted to progress to the next year of your course if you have any debts due to the University from previous years.

DEGREE CEREMONY

The University may refuse to allow you to attend a degree ceremony if tuition fees are outstanding.

APPEAL PROCESS

If you are unhappy about a decision concerning payment of your fees, including a requirement that you withdraw from the University, you may contact the Student Funding Adviser, and bring a complaint under the University’s Student Complaint Procedure. The Student Diary explains how you can make a complaint. New students may obtained a copy of the Student Diary from the Student Services Department. EARLY WITHDRAWAL

If you leave your programme of study early, you must ensure that you inform your Head of Subject and the Student Records department. The date of withdrawal will be deemed to be the date that the Student Records department receives written confirmation of withdrawal. You will be liable for all or part of the fee for the full academic year as follows:

If you leave within 28 days of the start of your programme of study, you will be liable for an administration fee of £250.

If you leave more than 28 days after the start of your programme of study, you will be liable for the appropriate proportion of the fee based on the semesters attended wholly or in part.

If you are making payment of fees by instalments and withdraw from your programme of study, you must still meet any shortfall between the full fee determined by the University and the total amount of the instalments already paid.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING FINANCIAL HARDSHIP

If you are experiencing financial difficulties in paying tuition fees you should seek help at the earliest possible opportunity. The University will be sympathetic and assist where it can. However, in order to maintain the quality of teaching for everyone else, the University must act to recover debts. Initially you should approach Bill Stronach, the Student Funding Adviser within Student Services for a confidential discussion. You may also wish to speak to a personal tutor or someone at the Students’ Union for advice and support.
