Postgraduate Diploma in Mammography

                            Current employment in a clinical environment offering mammography experience

The course has been designed to provide a coherent programme of education for radiographers in the breast imaging service to extend their professionalism and enhance their professional practice. This course is operated in collaboration with the Scottish Breast Screening Programme and has been approved by the of Radiographers.

Course Aims

  • To enhance the student's supervisory skills and awareness of the clinical environment.

  • To enhance the knowledge base to enable dissemination of a culture which will integrate theory with practice.

  • To nurture the development of learning organisations.

  • To develop an understanding of the practical measures to deal with the issues involved in delivering service quality improvements focused on the needs of patients and carers but beneficial to the department and staff.

  • To develop a high level of expertise in mammographic film interpretation, thus enabling the practitioner to participate in the diagnosis and assessment of breast disease.

Structure

The part-time Postgraduate Diploma course will involve both attendance at QMU and distance learning. Students are required to undertake further study equivalent to four modules.

A requirement of the Master's programme is that a student must have undertaken the equivalent of one Masters Level module in Research Methods to be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma. The other three modules are to be selected from an approved list.

Teaching and Assessment

As this course places the student at the centre of the learning process, you will be expected to take overall responsibility for you learning. The teaching and learning strategies are designed to enable independent progress within a supportive framework.

Your performance on the Postgraduate Diploma course will be assessed by presentation, portfolio, image interpretation and essay.

Progression

Students completing this course will be able to pursue further Masters level modules. To progress to a full Masters degree a student must undertake a minimum of two Research modules and a dissertation.
