Research Interests

My main interest is in developmental psychology and in how sustained childhood experiences and interactions contribute powerfully to social competence and mental well being in later life. Internal mental models can comprise the bases of individual differences in terms of social and cognitively behaviours that either promote or hinder mental well being.

A particlar interest is the contribution of attachment models towards personality disorders, psychosis and depression in adults and adolescents. Related to this is the overlap between attachment models and emotion regulation. Current projects include: the role of attachment in schizotypy; the contributions of adult attachment and memory to schizotypal traits (With Stephen Darling, Jay Myles and Ailidh Hutt); semantic categorisation and schizotypy (with Stephen Darling) attachment, emotion regulation and dispositional mindfulness (with Anna Trejnowska).

The roles that these factors play in the development of children, particularly in relation to education is another area of interest. Current projects include Theory of mind Development in children in Nurture groups (with Lynne Binne, Educational Psychologist, West Lothian Council) and Philosophical Inquiry as a tool to promote socio-emotional competence in school aged children.

Finally, I have an interest in the development of naive (untaught) theories in both children and adults. past projects have included: Children's naive theories of weight gain and loss: mechanical, or vitalistic? and adults' conceptualisations of superstitious events and phenomena.
