Current Research Focus

  • interactions between health care professionals and patients, especially as regards issues of trust, information provision and decision-making
  • individuals’ understandings of health, illness and treatment, e.g. mothers’ views of birth choices, older people’s experiences of cancer, young women’s views of Chlamydia
  • the effects of health and illness for identity in everyday life, e.g. identities of young people classed as having ‘learning disabilities’, quality of life for older people
  • healthcare professionals’ understandings of health, illness and treatment, e.g. perspectives on eating disorders
  • the implications of early infant-adult interactions for atypical populations, e.g. children managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and cystic fibrosis
  • issues of communication and identity across a diversity of settings, e.g. constructions of human resource managers and older jobseekers in organizational contexts, identities of migrants into established communities
