College and Mature Students

Thinking about going to university or returning to education, especially after a long gap, can be daunting. It may take quite a while to think through your decisions and depending on your circumstances you may need to plan well in advance of actually starting your degree course.

Queen Margaret University offers a large number of routes for students from college and mature students to access our degree courses. In 2006/07 59% of our undergraduate students were aged 21 or over (the definition of mature student at QMU), whilst 25% came to QMU from colleges.

We realise that everyone's circumstances are different and that while some students have family responsibilities and strong ties to the local area others may not. We recognise that for all students, deciding to return to education is a big step and that in order to plan for this change you need access to information and advice.

Within this section you will find information on the different routes onto our degree courses that exist, as well as useful information about student funding, childcare and other issues that may be particularly relevant to you.

Our Transition and Pre-Entry Guidance Adviser often acts as a first point of contact for new mature students and is part of a broader Student Services Team. You can contact them at any stage pre or post application.

For students studying Highers or HNC/D’s at college, we also have a designated College Articulation Officer who can provide advice and guidance both pre and post application.
