Business and Management

 |
This is an exciting time to be part of the QMU postgraduate experience. The division has developed three areas for postgraduate development. In late 2011 we saw the launch of our new MSc courses in Leadership and Management which are designed to focus on those with a wide range of honours or equivalent qualifications who wish to develop their business and leadership skills but seek a career change or personal development opportunity. Also, the MBA suite of courses has now completed a full review and re-validation. The PgCert Public Services Management has also been refreshed and, as one former graduate noted, ‘we’re in interesting times in the public sector with public expenditure declining and fewer people to do the same work; we need to work in smarter ways’. (For the latest information on these new courses please visit our website.) |
Graduates will be supported to develop the necessary skills to be able to make an impact within their working environment by offering advice, directing and influencing strategic priorities, and making focused decisions.
Why QMU?
QMU is very fortunate to have a new campus and new facilities but perhaps one of our key attributes is that we are a small and focused institution. The smaller class sizes mean that students and staff have the opportunity to get to know each other and develop opportunities in the learning environment. Our experience ranges widely: from strategic business decisions to family run enterprises, hospitality & tourism to events management and public sector management to social enterprises. This creates a truly rich learning experience for participants.
Industry links
We have a wide range of industry links that can be drawn on for many purposes. For example, visiting speakers from the public sector or business leaders from the private sector can be accessed, whilst social enterprises and community based organisations are a growing focus. We work with the Chartered Management Institute to open up opportunities for additional professional body accreditation as well as working with our overseas partners in Singapore, India and Nepal. These opportunities allow us to infuse our learning environment with opportunities for both students and staff to grow and develop in a range of settings.
Our approach to learning and teaching
The courses will enable students to realise their potential by facilitating their development as informed individuals who are prepared to engage in managerial and leadership roles. The diversity and richness of the teaching and learning experience is reflected in the strategies for assessment. Depending on routes selected you may experience a wide range of different assessment methods ranging from reports, presentations, group work and business plans all of which are designed to integrate with the professional focus of the courses undertaken. You will be expected to draw on your previous knowledge and skills to inform your postgraduate study, and will benefit from a variety of interesting ways to participate and share experiences and opinions with your peers, thereby deepening your understanding.
Career prospects and guideline salaries
Our postgraduate courses will enable you to manage your organisation more successfully. Our graduates have gone into a wide range of careers including developing their own business and social enterprises.
