Derek Santos

Derek is the research lead for Podiatry and his research interests are: biomechanics, orthotics, musculoskeletal foot problems and blood flow in the lower limb. He is active in these areas of research supervising student projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in addition to other funded studies.

Derek has currently been awarded 2 PhD grants and has supervised PhD research in the investigation of musculoskeletal management using orthotics for juvenile idiopathic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These projects are in collaboration with the rheumatology department at the Royal Hospital for Sick Kids (Edinburgh) and Rheumatology department in Fife.

Derek is also advising in vascular studies currently undertaken at the Vascular Unit, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

More recently Derek has been collaborating with industry and received funding for a number of new dermatological treatments.

Derek Santos has published in a wide range of journals and presented at various conferences.
