While completing my PhD into the biomechanical and physiological effects of different prosthetic feet in lower limb amputees, I worked as a gait laboratory technician at the University of Salford. In 2000 I started a post as research bioengineer in the Anderson gait analysis laboratory, Edinburgh. In this post I was responsible for several research projects related to the gait of children with cerebral palsy in particular the effect of electrical stimulation.
I started my post as Research Fellow Physiotherapy at Queen Margaret University in January 2004. This externally funded post (orthopaedic company) compared the functional outcome between two different knee implants for patients with osteoarthritis. The primary outcome was knee motion during activities of daily living using electrogoniometry, as well as daily physical activity and psychosocial factors. Currently, my post is funded by another orthopaedic company again to compare the functional outcome of two different knee implants. In May 2009 starts a pilot study comparing the outcome of minimally invasive with the standard approach of total knee replacement.
I am also supervising three PhD students whose topics are orthotic management of children with cerebral palsy, the effects of Functional Electrical Stimulation for patients with Multiple Sclerosis and the kinematic characteristics of the lumbo-pelvic area during gait and functional movements.
