Using Online Synchronous Learning Environments in higher education

OSLEs can be used in a variety of ways to enhance the learning environment such as:

Master classes
Tutors based at an institution’s campus can hold online lectures for students whilst they are studying away from the campus, for example, on placement or if they are distance learning/part time students. This will enable tutors to give a short lecture online followed by interactive learner break-out sessions and then finishing the session with a final plenary.

Virtual office hours
Tutors may wish to hold virtual office hours. A learner will book a virtual one-to-one session with a tutor when support is required and at a time convenient for both tutor and learner.

Virtual visiting lecturers
It is often difficult for subject area experts to travel; this can limit the educational experience that students are offered. These experts could present their sessions through the OSLE to students gathered in a physical learning space, for example, a lecture hall or seminar room, without having to travel. The sessions can be archived and used for revision or for groups of students unable to attend the OSLE session.

Support for distance/part-time learners
Support staff are often unable to provide the level of support that is required for part-time and distance learning students. OSLEs provide the opportunity for the librarian, for example, to become truly virtual, using systems like OSLEs to demonstrate use of online facilities and resources.

Facilitating problem-based learning online
Students could be provided with a case study and materials to find a solution to a specific issue. Students will then present their solutions through the OSLE.

Engaging with the industry
Students will be able to record presentations and demonstrations which will be shared with industry professionals. In professions like drama this would provide an opportunity for students to showcase their work for a wider audience.

Resits
Students are often outwith the institution but need to resit a short examination such as a presentation. OSLEs provide the opportunity for students to re-take examinations without the cost of travelling to the institution.
