QMU graduate and entrepreneur wins ‘Fresh Ideas’ prize

By Press Office

A graduate of Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, has won a cash prize from the Scottish Institute for Enterprise's (SIE) 'Fresh Ideas' initiative. Fresh Ideas is Scotland's longest-running national student enterprise competition for ideas in the early stages of development.

Jake Elliot-Hook – who graduated from QMU’s Psychology and Sociology programme in 2018 – was nominated for the award in the September round of the competition for his work with S'wheat, the Edinburgh based start-up company behind the world's first plant-based, double-ended water bottle. S'wheat was co-founded by Jake and his business partner, Amee Ritchie, to address the issue of most reusable water bottles being made from non-biodegradable materials.

The monthly winners, along with other highly commended entrants, progress to the second stage of the competition, where they have the opportunity to learn from experts on how to explore and develop their ideas at SIE's Exploration Day. Top prizes of £1200 will be awarded in March next year.

Congratulations Jake and Amee, and fingers crossed for the next stage of the competition!
