Creative Media production forms a core part of the undergraduate degree courses delivered at Queen Margaret University, with all students on our media programmes required to undertake work in this area. Students at all levels are encouraged to undertake major projects in creative and documentary video film making and production. At any one time we have upwards of 150 students undertaking media skills modules and utilising our media editing and production labs and resources.

Over the last five years we have graduated over 450 students with extensive training in media production skills, many of whom have gone on to win awards and distinguish themselves in the broadcast media field.

Examples of Student Work

In second year the Media Subject area runs a core module geared to familiarising students with all aspects of creative media practice and video film making. Further training occurs in Third and Honours years when students take modules in which they develop both group and individual/solo projects in creative and documentary video film. This includes an option in Honours year to undertake a Video Dissertation resulting in a 15 minute creative or documentary video film.

Student work across all years is assessed and the best examples are selected for inclusion in an end of year public screening at the Edinburgh Filmhouse. You can see examples of student work on QMU's YouTube site by clicking on the YouTube icon at the right.

Examples of Staff/Student Supported Projects:

a) Where Do You Come From?

A Royal Museums of Scotland film and exhibition project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots programme in 2004-2005. The QMU team supported training, production and post-production of short films and exhibitions by 12 young people from different backgrounds, who created documentary film and exhibition material exploring questions of identity, family roots and Scottish heritage. The material was subsequently put on public display in the Royal Museum of Scotland and also featured on their website. Click on the image to see the result.

b) Secret Life of The Museum

Another Royal Museums of Scotland film project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots programme, 2005-2006; working with young people, the QMU team supported training, production and post-production of a short, imaginative film exploring the artefacts of the Royal Museum of Scotland, and subsequently given a public screening at the Museum as well as being placed on their website..
