Programme Leader Profile - Dr Michael Stewart
The media industries are some of the most exciting and sought after areas to work in. The media have a significant impact in shaping culture and attitudes in modern society and are a major contributor to the global economy. The Media, Communication & Performing Arts Subject Area has offered media programmes since 1981, and our graduates have found employment with a wide range of commercial, public and voluntary media, creative and cultural organisations (see

The Film & Media programme comprises the theoretical, historical, contemporary and practical study of the film and media industries. It offers students the opportunity to study various media institutions and texts and the debates surrounding them, as well as the chance to study film in critical depth, as a commercial and artistic enterprise.
Students specialise in Film and Media from year 1, but are able to refine and increase this specialisation as they move through the four years of their degree. Students also acquire broad skills in media production, teamwork, academic research, project management, and communication, which enables them to develop careers in a related range of professions. |
In studying the Film and Media core areas you will learn:
- Critical approaches to popular American and European cinema;
- How creativity and authorship are constrained and conceptualised;
- How the media industries operate, how to analyse their products and understand their audiences;
- How media forms have developed and how they generate different kinds of aesthetic pleasures.
