Students ‘Swan Song’ showcases emerging talent in performing arts

Drama and Theatre Arts students from Queen Margaret University are staging a four day event which packs in 20 performances, aimed at showcasing their talents to arts industry professionals.

‘Swan Song’ Graduate Showcase is the culmination of four years learning and development that have led to the creation of 20 vibrant and visceral theatre productions.

QMU’s final year Drama and Theatre Arts (DTA) students have produced a festival of original work from Directing, Contemporary Performance and Playwright specialists that will be brought to you over four days at the end of March and beginning of April. An exhibition of Community Theatre projects will be on display with interviews and previews of the work supplied by the arts journalists.

Former Queen Margaret University graduates of DTA have gone on to sustain careers within Scottish theatre.

Emma Hay, DTA student, said: “Intense training in specialisms over two of our four year degrees has given us vocational and industry led skills that will prove invaluable to us as we embark on careers within the arts.”

Emma continued: “Although the performances are attended by arts industry professionals we would like to encourage local people to come along to the shows and experience the emerging talent from the University specialism in theatre arts.”

Kate Nelson, Programme Leader for Drama & Theatre Arts at Queen Margaret University, said: “The standard of work presented at the end of year student Showcase is usually very high, and this year should be no exception. The students have worked extremely hard to make this a dramatic and exciting event and it’s therefore a great opportunity for local people to visit the University, support the young students and enjoy some wonderful performances.”

The event will be held from 12noon - 9pm daily from Wednesday 30 th March until Saturday 2 nd April at the Studio Theatre, Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh, EH21 6UU.
