Queen Margaret University to evaluate Pope’s visit
The Pope’s visit to Scotland is to be officially evaluated by event specialists from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
The organising body for this Thursday’s Papal Visit, the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, has appointed Queen Margaret University’s International Centre for the Study of Planned Events as the official research and evaluation partner of the Official State Visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
Fifteen researchers from the University’s specialist events centre will carry out over 100 interviews with members of the general public who attend the St. Ninian’s Day Parade in Edinburgh. These interviews will attempt to measure people’s immediate reaction to seeing the Pope, as well as identifying whether people experienced a lasting legacy from Pope Benedict’s visit to Scotland. The research will also compare and contrast people’s experience of the Parade with official media reporting of the Pope’s visit.
In addition, Queen Margaret University event management and performing arts students will assist with the organisation and production of the Parade by helping with Parade performances, costume dressing and public safety.
Professor Joe Goldblatt, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Planned Events at Queen Margaret University, said: “This is not only a superb learning opportunity for our students to conduct some very exciting social research, it’s a once in a life-time opportunity to be officially involved in a papal visit.”
He continued: “Queen Margaret University is honoured to have been selected by Father Paul M. Conroy, General Secretary of The Bishops’ Conference of Scotland with the endorsement of His Eminence Cardinal Keith O’Brien. The research will provide the Bishops’ Conference and others with important evidence regarding the significance of this important and historic state visit.”
