Queen Margaret University launch new Health and Social Care programme with Jewel & Esk College and NHS Lothian
Edinburgh; October 20 2010; Queen Margaret University has signed an agreement to work in partnership with nearby Jewel & Esk College and NHS Lothian to provide a programme of education for Health and Social Care Support workers. Due to the increase in community based care there is a growing demand on the health and social care workforce to work in integrated teams to meet the care needs of individuals and families in an ageing population.
The innovative new programme, which builds on existing work delivered at both institutions, aims to enable support workers to fulfil their multifaceted role in a changing health and social care environment with confidence. It will provide a clear career progression among a group of workers that until now have been disadvantaged by lack of opportunity to pursue further or higher education in their chosen occupation.
Commenting on the programme QMU principal Professor Wend said; “ The value of working in partnership is that the collaborative teaching team can provide a holistic programme of education that contains the curricular elements to meet the learning needs of students as well as the diverse practice requirements of Health and Social Care support workers relevant in their day to day roles in the community.”
Lecturers from both institutions will be responsible for the delivery, co-ordination and assessment of modules including work based elements leading to a Higher Education Diploma in Health and Social Care with a subsidiary award of Higher Education Certificate in Health and Social Care. Participants have the opportunity to step on and off the qualifications framework while building up academic credits that can be transferred towards qualifications as appropriate for employment.
Jewel & Esk Principal Mandy Exley comments, “This is an outstanding example of partnership at its best. By working with two such well respected organisations as QMU and NHS Lothian, Jewel & Esk is able to provide a clearly defined programme that is very focussed and meets the operational work force demand of one of the region’s major employers.”
