Care accolade for innovative course

The Thistle Foundation and Queen Margaret University are delighted to announce that their Higher Education Certificate (HEC) in Person Centred Approaches has won the prestigious Care Accolade for ‘Investing in the workforce’. The award was presented at a ceremony in Aviemore which was hosted by Kaye Adams on Friday 11 June.

This innovative programme, delivered by Thistle Foundation in partnership with Queen Margaret University, aims to meet the challenges of delivering quality support services to vulnerable adults in the 21st century.

The course is rooted in the values and principles associated with social inclusion, person-centred working and individualised service delivery. Teaching promotes the importance of developing the right relationship between the person offering support and the person receiving support. This approach also emphasises the ways in which people can be supported to achieve valued social roles in their communities.

Diana Paton, Chief Executive of Thistle Foundation, said: To win a Care Accolade for our HEC is absolutely wonderful. We are extremely proud to be recognised for our contribution to social services working in the heart of Scotland’s communities.”

Jean Harbison, Senior Lecturer at Queen Margaret University, said: “People working in the social care sector are often not acknowledged for their expertise which is essential in delivering high quality care. This course offers carers the opportunity to gain a university award which recognises the skills and knowledge that they develop over the course of the programme. I am absolutely delighted that The Thistle team has received this well deserved award.”

Graduates of the course go on to offer truly personalised support to vulnerable people at risk of exclusion within society. These include young people in transition, older people, people who are homeless, disabled or living with a mental health problem.
