From central Edinburgh

By train
The train is the fastest way to the campus, with the journey taking around 6 minutes from Edinburgh Waverley Station. Musselburgh train station is right next to our campus, a two minute walk from the main academic building. You should take the North Berwick train from Waverley Station. Musselburgh is the first stop. By bus
Lothian Buses service 30 stops on campus and runs every ten minutes with an approximate journey time of 35 minutes from Edinburgh city centre. More information on the route of the number 30 is available on the Lothian Buses website.

For people who are not familiar with Edinburgh, you can catch the number 30 from several bus stops on Princes Street. The journey will cost £1.30 each way, or you can buy a day ticket for £3.50 which will enable you to unlimited travel for that day on all Lothian buses (except the ‘Airlink’ bus). The Lothian Buses service 45 also comes to campus at peak times, Monday to Friday.

From Edinburgh Airport
From Edinburgh Airport, you can catch the 'Airlink 'bus into the city centre and alight at the Waverley station stop (just off Princes Street) and follow the directions for bus or train travel below.

From West Lothian and Stirlingshire by train
Newcraighall Station is located 15/20 minutes walk to the north west of the QMU campus. Musselburgh station is served by trains from Edinburgh and East Lothian, whilst Newcraighall is served by trains from Edinburgh, West Lothian and Stirlingshire. Trains run from Haymarket and Waverley Station to both Musselburgh and Newcraighall. Detailed information can be found on the First Scotrail website at http://www.scotrail.co.uk/timetables-routes

From east, west, north and south of Edinburgh city centre by bus (then walking)
Musselburgh is served by the Lothian bus services 26, 44 and 30 . The 30 (and the 45 which doesn't go through Musselburgh toen centre) are the only services to go onto campus however. If it is more convenient for you to catch a 44 or a 26, the campus is a 15 minute walk from Musselburgh high street. Alternatively, you could catch a 30 from Musselburgh high street (heading to Clovenstone).

To walk, we recommend that you get off the bus at the first stop after the brunton Theatre. From here you will see the River Esk to your left. You should walk up Esk Side West (the road that runs parallel to the right of the river) towards Stoneybank. This continues onto Eskview Terrace. You will notice a few newsagents and take aways on your right. Immediately after these shops, take the first right onto onto Whitehill Farm Road. Continue on up this road and you will arrive at QMU (it's just after the train station).

From East Lothian
You can get a train to Musselburgh Station from North Berwick, Drem, Longniddry, Prestonpans and Wallyford Stations. See the Scotrail website for train times.

From Midlothian
Depending on where you're coming from, the following options may be convenient. The First bus services 141 and 142 come to campus. It may also be convenient for you to catch a Lothian Buses number 30 from Newington. If you catch a bus to Musselburgh, you can follow the walking directions above or catch a number 30 (heading to Clovenstone) from outside the police station.

BY CAR

Cars can access the campus via a sliproad off the A1 southbound, between the exit for Newcraighall/Craigmillar and the Old Craighall Roundabout. Drivers should note that the access by car is not permitted via Whitehall Farm Road (by Musselburgh Station).

By Car from Central Edinburgh: 20 mins
From the East End of Princes Street or Queen Street take the A900 towards Leith Walk. Take the left hand turn onto London Road (more or less opposite Gayfield Square, and signposted Berwick Upon Tweed A1). Follow the A1 signs, past Easter Road, and Meadowbank Stadium then turn right into Willowbrae Road at the Jocks Lodge traffic lights junction. Continue for about 2 miles until the junction at the A1. Take a right onto the A1, and continue along, over the roundabout and past the exit to Newcraighall. Take the following exit on the left after the Queen Margaret University sign. Take a left at the end of the slip road and follow round to the car park entrance, first on the right.

By Car from Fife: 30 mins
Take the M90 south towards Edinburgh (signposted Forth Road Bridge). Continue on to the A90 crossing the Forth Road Bridge and on into Edinburgh. At the Barnton Junction turn right onto Maybury Road - A902 (signposted City Bypass) through roundabout to the end. At Maybury Junction turn right onto the Glasgow Road - A8 (signposted City Bypass). At Gogar Roundabout take the 2nd exit onto The City of Edinburgh Bypass - A720 (signposted Berwick upon Tweed). Travel along the A720 through Sheriffhall Roundabout, taking the 3rd exit onto The City of Edinburgh Bypass - A720. Through Old Craighall Junction, at roundabout take 1st exit, which merges onto the A1. You are now travelling west towards Edinburgh, and you will pass the university on your right, but you will need to continue to the next junction at Newcraighall and double back onto the Eastbound A1. Take the following exit on the left after the Queen Margaret University sign. Take a left at the end of the slip road and follow round to the car park entrance, first on the right.

By Car from West Lothian: 30 mins
Take the M9, at the Newbridge Junction roundabout take the 2nd exit, to continue on the M9. At the junction with the M8, branch left on to the M8. At M8 junction 1, keep in right hand lane signposted City Bypass South. At Hermiston Junction roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A720 (signposted City Bypass South). The A720 and Edinburgh Bypass merge together. When you reach Sheriffhall roundabout, take the 3rd exit to continue along Edinburgh Bypass - A720. At Old Craighall Junction roundabout take 1st exit, which merges onto the A1. You are now travelling west towards Edinburgh, and you will pass the university on your right, but you will need to continue to the next junction at Newcraighall and double back onto the Eastbound A1. Take the following exit on the left after the Queen Margaret University sign. Take a left at the end of the slip road and follow round to the car park entrance, first on the right.

By Car from East Lothian:- 30 mins
Travelling along the Westbound carriageway, you will pass the University on your right. There is no direct access to the campus from this carriageway. Instead continue to the next exit for Newcraighall and follow that road round to the right, under the A1 and back up the other side onto the Eastbound carriageway. The slip road to the campus will then be the next exit off the A1.

Exiting campus by vehicle

There is only one exit which will take you back onto the A1. You should follow the road to the Craighall Roundabout where you will be able to exit as necessary. The roundabout will allow connections to the east, west, south, into Edinburgh city centre and anywhere northbound.

Please note that if you use a route planner website (eg RAC, Google Maps, Multimap) it does not give you accurate directions to the campus by car and tells you to access the campus from the wrong side. Car users MUST access the campus off the A1 (at the Musselburgh Bypass stretch).
