Sustainability and Learning Services

Sustainability is a central part of the ethos here at Queen Margaret University. Learning Services are helping make QMU even more sustainable by utilising new technologies and services to ensure this ethos is upheld.
Intelligent Energy Systems
The lighting and temperature within the LRC is controlled through the Building Energy Management System. Lighting will be automatically switched off where no movement is detected. The ceilings consist of exposed concrete slabs which absorb the heat generated during the day and then cool at night allowing the building to maintain a consistent temperature. Blinds are fitted to most windows which can be opened or closed when necessary. Opening windows are fitted in the main area of the LRC and in the IT Seminar Rooms to allow cooling during the warmer weather.
Recycling
Recycling bins are placed throughout the LRC, covering most major waste types including plastic and paper. We appreciate the efforts made by users to place waste in the correct type of bin.
Technology
'Thin client' technology is widely used throughout the LRC whereby software and hardware are stored on central servers, thus minimising heat generation and therefore reducing the need for increased ventilation. The energy consumption of the thin client terminals is significantly less than a traditional PC (at 34kwh/year compared with 320kwh/year for a PC). Multi-Function Devices are also used in the LRC. An MFD can print, copy, scan and email thereby reducing the footprint needed by numerous individual machines, and again reducing power consumption.
Electronic resources
The LRC has invested heavily in electronic resources, where appropriate. This enables a greater number of users to access material, resulting in economies of scale. In addition, access to resources through the remote desktop, and via loaned laptops, reduces the need for printing and eliminates paper waste.
Books and DVDs
One of the best ways to be sustainable, and save money in the process, is to borrow books and DVDs from the LRC. Loans are free, and renewing items to prevent charges is very simple and can be done in many ways. The LRC will send an automated email reminder to all users who have items on loan. Where possible, all communication with users is by email.
LRC staff consider very carefully the life of a book once it is beyond use. All withdrawn books are offered to users at a much reduced cost, and any which are not bought are recycled through Bookdonors, a local Scottish Borders charity.
Green bags
The LRC sells reusable eco-friendly jute bags, so support your LRC and buy a bag to carry home all those books!
