Some say reading is an introverted activity that is so subjective that it should not be shared, but others say reading should be the basis for the sharing of ideas and the widening of perspectives.
For those who share the latter view, the Learning Resource Centre hosts a monthly Reading Group meeting, which aims to provide an alternative reading experience to the university community. Essentially, the Reading Group gives its members the opportunity to enjoy the evaluative reading of fiction and non-fiction in a relaxed and uncritical atmosphere.
With support from the East Lothian Library Services, the LRC can provide its Reading Group members with free copies of books for the meetings, which makes the Reading Group virtually cost-free, except for any goodies that the members bring to share. The LRC provides free coffee and tea during the meetings.
The Reading Group also promotes interaction between members of staff from the different departments in the university and students.
The Reading Group welcomes new members at any time and meets every first Thursday of the month. A moderator message is sent out a week before each meeting to let people know the venue. The Reading Group is also open to members of the public.
The next meeting of the Wednesday Lunchtime Reading Group is on the 3rd of February 2010.
The next meeting of the Thursday Reading Group is on the 4th of February 2010.
