Additional information for Distance Learners

As a student at Queen Margaret University you have access to the resources of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), including the extensive, selected collection of online resources.

This section of the LRC website is dedicated to you, the distance learner. Each service and resource available to you is explained with added links to interactive tutorials where available.

To access all of these resources from off campus you must use Remote Access . If you want to print to your own Printer when you are using Remote Access, you must either send it to you email address ( and then access you email account when you are not using Remote Access ) or save to your local drive and then print from there.

Learning Resource Centre Induction - is designed to give you a brief introduction to the IT and Library Services that are available at the LRC. It will show you what format your network username and password will look like, how to log-on to WebCT and describes what electronic resources are available to you. N.B. May contain material that is campus specific and not related to Distance Learners

The Effective Learning Service

The Effective Learning Service at QMU provides guidance and support for students wishing to develop their study and learning skills. The ELS is only able to offer extensive individual support to students on campus. However, the Effective Learning Service website does contain useful guides on essay writing, note-taking, reading skills and other key skills for study, as well as resources for non-native speakers of English.

Are you ready for distance learning?

Take a few minutes to test your distance learning readiness here by answering the following five questions. There are no right or wrong answers – the exercise is designed to make you think about how prepared you are. Take some time to reflect on your choice of answers, and question whether you need to adapt or change your approaches to learning, in order to learn effectively at a distance.
