Accommodation

In order to ensure that your registration into Queen Margaret University Accommodation is as smooth as possible, please read the following information carefully.

Arrival Times

QMU’s main arrival date is Saturday 10th September i.e. the date most students will check into Halls and collect their keys in advance of Induction Week.

On Saturday 10th September, the following times are applicable for your allocated Hall of Residence. The times of arrival are different for each block, so please ensure you arrive during the times allocated below, where possible. We do appreciate that for students travelling from further afield, especially from overseas, it may not be possible to plan your travel arrangements to ensure you arrive within our specified arrival times. All we ask is that if you are likely to arrive outwith the hours of 10am and 4pm on any of the four specified arrival days you should advise us of your arrival day/time so we can plan for your arrival.

Alternatively, you may choose to arrive on the Friday 2nd September (the date the Contract begins for both 40 and 50 week leases) or on Saturday 3rd September if the main arrival weekend is not suitable. The times of arrival for all Halls on both days are still as indicated above. You must contact the Accommodation Office if you want to do this.

Unfortunately, we do not have on-campus accommodation for family or friends accompanying students on arrival. Therefore we have included a list of Hotels/B&Bs in the local area in our ‘QMU Student Residential Village Guide 2011-12’, a copy of which you will find on the pages of your Halls contract online. We advise you to print off a copy for your reference, as it contains important information about arrival and facilities provided.

General Information

  • Student Guides and staff will greet you at the main gate of the campus and direct you to drop off points in the car park. Staff are identifiable by ID cards and Student Guides by their colourful T-Shirts.
  • Please remember to bring one form of identification or a printed copy of your Halls contract and confirmation of payment of deposit (e.g. Paypal payment confirmation email).
  • Car parking spaces are limited and we would ask you to move your car as soon as you have unpacked and moved in. Please ensure that this is done as swiftly as is reasonably possible. For more information on Parking and QMU’s Green Travel Policy, please refer to our website: http://www.qmu.ac.uk/travel/parking.htm

If you cannot arrive on your specified arrival day please ensure that you telephone Accommodation Services on 0131 474 0000, asking for ‘Accommodation’ when prompted.

INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR STUDENTS

Information sessions for Students living in the student residential village will take place within a week of arrival – the exact dates, times and venues for these sessions will be advised on your arrival by Accommodation Services Team.

Insurance

It is a good idea to take out insurance for your personal belongings whether you are staying in the Halls of Residence or off campus. If you are living in Halls, basic personal contents insurance is provided under the University scheme through Endsleigh Insurance (£6.00, paid as part of your deposit). A number of companies offer inexpensive cover. For more information, please contact the Students’ Union.

If you have any questions that you can't find the answers to on these pages, please click here to visit our useful contacts page and give us a call or drop us an email.

You can also visit the Accommodation section of our website. This section is not specific to Induction: http://www.qmu.ac.uk/services/student_accommodation.htm
