Background
Increasingly, professionals in the health care field in low and middle income countries need to have a firm
understanding of health economics in order to appreciate the different roles of the private, not-for-profit and
public sectors in health care, use the techniques of economic evaluation, and participate in debates about the
organisation and financing of health care.
These short courses are aimed at health care professionals working in the public, not-for-profit or private
sectors, and those working in academic centres or government.
The Institute for International Health and Development, founded in 1993, is a multi disciplinary centre for
education, research and technical assistance supporting international health development in low and middle
income countries. The Institute is headed by Professor Barbara McPake, a renowned international health
economist and author of the text Health Economics: An International Perspective, widely used to teach health
economics all over the world. The Institute is well placed to strengthen capacity in health economics for
development through these short courses.
A certificate from Queen Margaret University will be awarded to participants on successful completion of each course they undertake.
Teaching structure and methods
Each course will be a mix of formal presentations and smaller group work in which participants will have the opportunity
to pursue their own particular interests, analysing case studies and policy problems using the conceptual frameworks in
Health Economics: An International Perspective. The courses will use examples from all areas of the world, with a particular
focus on Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Each participant will receive an extensive course pack, containing copies of the presentations on memory sticks, the
book Health Economics: An International Perspective by Barbara McPake and Charles Normand (second edition, 2008,
Routledge), other sources of information, and case study materials.
Accommodation
The teaching and personal accommodation will be on the new campus of Queen Margaret University. The campus, which opened in 2007, is
a vibrant new academic village with high-tech buildings and attractive landscaped spaces, featuring an innovative learning resource centre at the heart of the development. The personal accommodation consists of modern, en-suite rooms with internet connection points and shared
kitchen and lounge facilities.
