Aims of the course
To provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • recognise when to use different types of economic evaluation
  • appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of different types of economic evaluation
  • understand the techniques used to measure and value costs and benefits
  • identify the policy implications of economic evaluations
  • understand published economic evaluations
  • clarify the strengths and limitations of economic evaluation as a tool for decision making

Who should attend?
Health care policy makers, health care providers concerned with cost-effectiveness in the delivery of health care, and researchers needing to incorporate economic evaluations into their studies.

Provisional programme
Four sessions each day, two in the morning, two in the afternoon

• The different types of economic evaluation
• Measuring costs

Day 2
Wednesday 15 August 2012
• Case studies in costing
• Non monetary measures of health effects: DALYs and QALYs
• Monetary measures of health effects
• Case studies in measuring health effects

Day 3
Thursday 16 August 2012
• Practical steps in conducting an economic evaluation
• Economic evaluation as a framework for decision making
• Using decision trees in economic evaluation

Day 4
Friday 17 August 2012
• Exploring the WHO-CHOICE model
• Case studies of economic evaluations
• Review of course and close
