Participatory Appraisal and Evaluation

(NOT OFFERED IN 2010-2011)

 

This module will serve to provide skills that will allow participants to use participatory methods in appraisal and evaluaton contexts, and conceptual tools to assist in the analysis of their appropriate deployment. Particular emphasis is given to relating participatory findings to programme goals, methods and assumptions, and thereby providing evidence to shape programme design and implementation.

Content will include:

  • the history and rationale of participative methodologies
  • rapid rural appraisal and participative rapid appraisal
  • techniques for participatory data collection
  • frameworks for analysis: gender sensitivity; pro-poor orientation; stakeholder interests
  • role of participative data in programme appraisal and evaluation
  • case studies of participative appraisal and evaluation
  • social appraisal of programme proposals
  • developing an evaluation framework
  • ethics in participative data collection
  • implementing a participative evaluation

Credit Rating: 15 SCOTCAT/5ECTS
