International Public Health
The course aim is to provide participants with background to the key public health issues, disciplines and approaches relevant to an international programme of studies including public health in tropical infectious disease and HIV burdened settings.
The content includes an introduction of epidemiology (measures of morbidity and mortality; counts, ratios, proportions, rates; prevalence and incidence; basic measures of risk; sources of data for use in epidemiology); disease burden patterns around the world; major trends in disease patterns and factors influencing those (reference to epidemiological transition; HIV and TB epidemics; new and growing environmental risks; disease related inpacts of glovalisation; effects of economic crisis); WHO recommended strategies for disease control programmes including HIV, TB and malaria, integrated management of childhood illness, neglected tropical diseases, newly emerging chronic disease (balance between preventation and treatment and rationale; vertical versus integrated management; the Essential Health Package approach); selected issues in public health.
