Course Information

Queen Margaret University Graduate School welcomes applications for doctoral studies in our specialist subject areas.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Queen Margaret University’s focus is on key subject areas which are in the line with our vision. Before applying for a PhD, ensure you identify first that your proposed research area is one in which QMU can offer supervisory expertise. We highly recommend that you contact potential supervisors prior to submitting an application.

Professional Doctorate

We offer a professional doctorate which has been designed for experienced professionals working in health and social sciences.

This qualification is for those who normally already have Masters level qualifications and two or more years expertise in a professional field, and want to conduct PhD level study related to their professional area whilst working. The research is usually carried out at the place of employment.

PhD by publication

QMU offers suitable staff members the opportunity to complete a PhD by publication. The PhD by publication shares most of the characteristics of the PhD and is normally awarded on the basis of a series of peer-reviewed academic papers, books, citations or other materials that have been published, accepted for publication, exhibited or performed, usually accompanied by a substantial commentary linking the published work and outlining its coherence and significance, together with an oral examination at which the candidate defends his/her research.

Research Centres

QMU has six research centres, and you can find out more about the opportunities for PhD study that these themes offer by visiting the links below:
