Why use an ePortfolio?

For learning

You can use your ePortfolio for many purposes, for example:

  • To keep evidence (in one central online area) of the many transferable skills that you have developed whilst studying at QMU. Verbal and written communication skills, analytical and critical skills, skills in using information technology are just some examples of the many skills achieved whilst learning that will be attractive to employers and you will have developed most of these whilst at QMU. Depending on your specialist area of study, you will have many more skills to add to your portfolio. In the folio in our ePortfolio, you can bring together all of the evidence together to reflect and to plan for your future learning.
  • To help you self assess and monitor aspects of your learning development. The Learning Profile in our ePortfolio is designed for your own private use where you can critically evaluate your learning progress and can identify the areas that require further development and perhaps help from tutors and/or the Effective Learning Service.
  • To provide information on your academic progress for your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). It will be you who will release the required information for your PAT as staff at QMU do not have access to your ePortfolio.
  • Develop and present a portfolio of work or a reflective account on an aspect of your learning as part of course work assessment. Your QMU ePortfolio can help you with the development of such tasks, as the ePortfolio can also be a very useful learning tool. Course work can be developed, stored and shared with others within your ePortfolio space without jeopardising the privacy of your other material.
After graduation
  • To build your Curriculum Vitae. This may be used not only for employment applications but can also be used as evidence of learning achievements for a professional body, for entry to a course of study or to support your claim for a particular area of expertise for a wider audience.

  • Your ePortfolio can help you when applying for graduate jobs. Everyone who applies for a graduate job will either already have a degree or be in the final year of their degree course, so employers will also expect evidence of relevant work experience and suitable skills. By using your ePortfolio to reflect on your degree course, work experience, placements, interests and achievements, you will have relevant examples ready to use as evidence of your suitability when applying for graduate jobs.

Guidelines for using your ePortfolio for graduate jobs have been developed by QMU's careers service. Further information can be found on the QMU careers service web pages.
