Case studies for tutors

This page provides additional materials for tutors interested in developing ePortfolios for learning, teaching, assessment and PDP. Case studies are provided by tutors who have used the ePortfolio.

Case studies

ePortfolios have been implemented in several subject areas at QMU since 2005, including Drama, Radiography, Education, Physiotherapy, Hospitality, and Media. Here are some more case studies provided by tutors who have used ePortfolios:

Simon Girdler
BA/BA(Hons) Performance Production and Management
(PDF 24KB)
This programme examined the totality of performance production and management and the students undertook a large amount of practical activity as part of their degree. The ePortfolio was introduced as a tool to encourage the students to reflect on their practical experience, by completing a reflective journal. Using the ePortfolio in this way helped to make this process more formal and encouraged the students to focus on their personal development.

Trevor Laffin
Contemporary Food and Drink (PDF 34KB)
This is a core module of BA/BA(Hons) Hospitality and Tourism Management and BA/BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management, which aims to introduce students to a range of factors influencing the production, provision and consumption of various food and drink products. In this example, the ePortfolio meeting tool was used by groups of students to record their weekly group meetings. The tool provided a structure for recording specific details, such as statement of purpose, location details, dates, attendees, outcomes, and supporting resources, as well as facilitating reflection on the processes of group work.

Caroline Gibson & Kath MacDonald
Using ePortfolios for Integrated Professional Education (IPE) (PDF 18KB)
This is a module which involves all undergraduate healthcare learners at Queen Margaret University. First-year IPE students were introduced to the blog tool in the ePortfolio in an informal way, as a reflective tool. This example demonstrates the tutors' plans for introducing ePortfolio using a more structured approach the following year and the anticipated learner outcomes. An example of a reflective journal was developed to introduce subsequent learners to the blog tool and the purpose of using a reflective journal for this module is set out in an introductory document.

Jim Sharp & Jim Bee
Using ePortfolio blogs for Study and IT Skills (PDF 21KB)
Here is an example of a programme wide introduction to ePortfolio. All first-year Media, Communications and Sociology and Psychology students at Queen Margaret University were introduced to the ePortfolio as part of the core module, Study and IT skills. This module was delivered entirely online via WebCT. The tutors' plans for introducing ePortfolio and the anticipated learner outcomes are illustrated in this example.

Jane Hislop
MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-Registration)
This example demonstrates how ePortfolio has been used with Post-graduate Physiotherapy students in a Professional Studies module, as a medium for submission of a reflective assignment. The summative assignment for the module, presented as ePortfolio, is a critical reflective account of the students’ learning experiences in relation to the learning outcomes of the module. Here Jane's experiences have been recorded on video and embedded in a narrated power point.
