Helen Smith Helen Smith studies BSc Drama and Theatre Arts at Queen Margaret University. She chose QMU as she wanted to study in Edinburgh and QMU was the only institution to offer the type of course she was interested in. Helen talks about all the experience that she has gained from the course so far: adapting a short story to the stage, playwriting, film projects, setting up a theatre company to name a few. Helen came to this course with an interest in the theatre but ultimately she didn’t know what individual path to take. Because she has sampled every aspect of theatre she has now realised that she is particularly interested in costume design and hopes to work in the wardrobe department of a theatre after graduating. Helen did live in the halls of residence on campus when she first came to QMU and shared with two of her classmates. After having made such good friends in the halls, the girls all now live off campus and share a flat in Edinburgh city centre. Helen loves Edinburgh. She says that it’s easy to get a part-time job there. She currently works in the Edinburgh Playhouse (one of Edinburgh’s main theatres which has played host to West End favourites such as Chicago, Joseph, Phantom of the Opera, to name but a few). She loves her job, works with a great like-minded group and she gets paid for working in the area that she studies.
