PhD Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Glasgow, Glasgow
After completing my BSc (Honours) in Physiology, I took up a Research Assistant post at Glasgow University which enabled me to register for a PhD. My research topic was ‘Seasonal variations in energy balance in rural Indian women’ and I spent one year at the National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad, India, collecting a wide range of metabolic, dietary and activity measurements on Indian women living in rural villages during the ‘lean’ and ‘harvest’ seasons.
My interest in energy balance now includes those living in developed countries and since joining Queen Margaret University in 1994 I have continued to research this area. My main interests lie in the determinants of weight gain and weight loss, the role of fats, carbohydrates and proteins on hunger and satiety, and the influence of eating patterns, in particular, eating frequency, on weight control.
I am currently Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in for the Nutrition BSc (Honours) course and my teaching responsibilities span from first year undergraduate students to Masters and PhD students. In 2004 the BSc Nutrition course was accredited by the Nutrition Society. I am also a registered Public Health Nutritionist.
