Can I use a Mac for my studying?

Mac’s can be used for accessing websites and QMU web based resources, including WebCT ePortfolio and Outlook. Mac’s are not used at QMU and if you use a Mac with Microsoft applications, for example WORD you may find that the files will not open on QMU PC’s, always check with your tutor and other students that they can open your files.

Can QMU advise me on purchasing software?

Information Services is not licensed to sell or loan any application software to students, except for SPSS and PinPoint. For Microsoft operating systems or Office applications, students are advised to contact a reputable retailer. With your QMU matriculation card, you will be entitled to purchase a ‘Student Version’ of most Microsoft products. These versions are fully functional, and often provided at a substantial discount.

SPSS

SPSS is a statistical package used mainly by social science courses. It is available to all current QMU students for a one-off licence fee.

An installation Pack, (consisting of ‘SPSS CD Rom’ & ‘SPSS Installation Guide’) can be borrowed from Information Services Department under the condition that it is returned within 2 Weeks from date of borrowing.

What is the role of my Personal Academic Tutor?

The role of the Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) is to provide support and guidance that will help you to make the most of your learning opportunities at QMU. Each student has a named Personal Academic Tutor with whom regular meetings will take place (at least one a semester). During these meetings you will have the opportunity to discuss your academic progress and any concerns you may have. Your programme leader can provide you with further information about your PAT.
