The HUB

discussionInterested in getting involved and participating in the work of The Centre for the Older Person's Agenda (COPA) at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh?

Although COPA is undertaking a reduced amount of project work, sadly the majority of these projects are coming to an end soon and the university is not in a position to be able to continue to financially support the Centre (see our December 2010 statement).

We will however continue to keep you updated on issues/developments which may be of interest to you for as long as project work continues.

_______________________________________________________________________________

In April 2008, COPA officially launced The HUB. This is our group of older activists and through COPA, they can have their voices heard as a group.

A number of years ago, COPA began a course entitled Education for Participation, an empowering course which provides participants with all kinds of skills: listening; research; perceiving others points of view; how to prepare or decipher documents and how to hear older people's voices in a formal setting such as a public meeting.

Having 'empowered' a number of older people, it seemed sensible to pool all these voices together and also to begin to collect the voices of those who are seldom heard - those in care homes, with learning disabilities, with dementia and those who are just home alone. Join these with a number of professionals who work with older people and we can have one very loud voice!

Our commitment to the involvement and participation of older people in the activities of COPA and more widely with issues related to older people has led to the development of The HUB.

The HUB Network – what is it?

  • A network of people with a common interest in issues related to the older person’s agenda;
  • Linked with the COPA Advisory Panel – a participative panel of older people involved with core COPA activities;
  • A mechanism for communication and sharing of information;
  • A way to keep HUB members informed of activities and opportunities to become involved and participate;
  • In the future HUB members will be able to communicate with and through COPA to the wider HUB community.

Membership of the HUB will:

  • Keep people informed of issues and developments in the field of older people;
  • Give rise to opportunities to comment on policy and consultation documents;
  • Offer opportunities to become involved and participate, for example, in research either as a co researcher or as a project steering group member, or in education as a co facilitator;
  • Share ideas and information;
  • Act as a platform for debate and discussion;
  • Raise awareness of issues of concern;
  • Support self advocacy.
