Accreditation and Collaboration
Community nurses now able to gain academic recognition through Fellowship by Assessment.
Community nurses who undertake the Fellowship by Assessment offered by the Queen’s Nursing Institute, Scotland will now be able to have their learning recognised.
Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, specialists in community nurse education, will provide the credit rating for The Fellowship by Assessment.
The Fellowship is designed for experienced community nurses who wish to progress their careers and match their skills and learning more easily to the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
For the past six years The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Scotland (QNIS) has run a successful Fellowship programme for experienced community nurses. This programme has given nurses the opportunity to demonstrate the quality of their practice through a portfolio of evidence. However, without the accreditation it was difficult for nurses to match their skills against academic programmes.
Dr Shona Cameron, Programme Leader for the MSc Primary Care at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, explained: “The move to credit rate the course means that nurses completing the programme can now gain academic recognition for their learning more easily. Nurses can now claim 40 credit points at degree level (level 9). This can be used as evidence of current CPD activity to demonstrate their ongoing achievements.”
Nurses who participate in this programme are already qualified and experienced community nurses. As part of their CPD students on this programme work towards producing a portfolio of evidence of their learning and practice achievements, demonstrating enhanced clinical and leadership skills.
This part-time distance learning programme, which can be completed in one or two years, is offered to community nurses throughout Scotland. Its flexible structure allows participants to study while continuing with their day to day work. Some attendance at workshops is required and a QNIS facilitator provides support and coaching throughout.
Successful completion of the programme provides nurses with the award of Fellowship of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, Scotland (FQNIS) and is celebrated at an annual ceremony.
