Careers and Student Employment Service

Information for Staff - how the Careers Service can help
It is probably fair to say that the days are now long gone when a degree in itself was a passport to a job. In an increasingly competitive employment market it is becoming more and more important to ensure that our students not only have the skills necessary to enter the world of work but also have the tools at their disposal to enable them to explore and utilise all potential routes into employment.
The Careers Service is here to assist and support students to consider the options and opportunities available to them both during their studies and for up to 2 years post graduation on all careers related topics, including application form completion, writing a CV and preparing for interviews.
Throughout the academic session, the Careers Service provides a series of seminars/workshops on a number of topics relating to the world of work. However, the Careers Advisers, Marion Pollock and Lena Bauchop, are equally happy to provide sessions within academic programmes for specific year groups and would be delighted to discuss the benefits of embedding employability within the curriculum. In order to derive maximum benefit from such sessions we would however recommend wherever possible circa 10 students or 6 as an absolute minimum.
To discuss and arrange a session specifically for your students, please email careers or contact Marion and Lena directly. Although both work part-time the workload is shared equally between them and they see students from all schools and subject areas although the initial points of contact are as follows:-
Arts and Social Sciences Marion Pollock
Business, Enterprise and Management Lena Bauchop
Health Sciences Lena Bauchop
From the start of the 2010/11 academic year students can also attend weekly drop-in sessions for a 20/25 minute interview with one of the Careers Advisers on either a Monday morning or Thursday afternoon. No prior appointment is necessary.
Students can also explore their options in individual careers guidance interviews and continue their research in the Careers Library, which is open Monday-Friday from 09.00-16.30.
