If you are new to teaching in Higher Education or are currently in a professional role that involves teaching or training, this course will help you build a solid foundation to your educational practice, offer opportunities to discuss a wide range of issues around teaching and learning and provide a platform for networking across disciplines and professions.
Furthermore, the Short Course links in to our MSc in Professional and Higher Education. Successful completion of the Short Course is equivalent to attendance at the Education in Action 1 module. If you intend to submit the assessment for this module after the Short Course, you need to submit a separate application for the MSc. For further information on this and other questions please see the Frequently Asked Questions.
The course is designed to allow participants the time and space for in-depth engagement, networking and reflection, uninterrupted by other work commitments, through:
- Micro-teaching: opportunities to teach, be observed and receive constructive feedback on your teaching; to observe others teach and thereby experience a range of approaches; for peer- and self evaluation of practice in an informal setting.
- Short information briefings highlighting particular aspects of the teaching role, such as eLearning, Plagiarism, Student Support, Assessment for learning, Theories of learning.
- In-depth workshops on teaching, learning and assessment, exploring for example marking, feedback, group work, lecturing, course design.
The course programme requires a significant commitment from participants, both in terms of time and effort. Over the five days a sense of familiarity and trust develops that is conducive to open discussion and sharing of ideas and practice. If you decide to join the course, we therefore ask you to please commit to the full programme. Refreshments (and scones) will be provided to keep you going!
You can view a copy of the current Course leaflet here (pdf).
