Opportunities for research students

We are always keen to welcome new research students into the Division, whether you are a recent graduate, mid-career, full-time or part-time. As an active member of the Division's research community, you will play an important part in our research culture.

QMU funded bursaries are available annually in the autumn when we will publish brief outlines of PhD projects that we would like researchers to pursue. We ask you to develop one of these outline proposals further in your application, paying particular attention to suitable methodological approaches. With most proposals there will be a degree of flexibility to refocus the aims, context etc. Division bursaries are awarded competitively, following an interview, to suitably qualified candidates.

Applications from self-funding students are also invited. The selection process is similar to that for bursaries in that you must be suitably qualified. You too will be required to prepare an outline proposal for the project you are planning to undertake and there will be an interview. Please note that only projects that fit closely with established staff research and where the necessary supervisory capacity is available will be considered.

We expect from applicants good research awareness and an excellent command of sustained writing in English. However, QMU's Centre for Academic Practice provides further research training, covering both qualitative and quantitative methods.

We also welcome discussions with organisations that have an interest in our research and might like to fund a studentship at some point.
