Course Details :
This course is open to artists, health care workers, health & social care professionals, teachers and counsellors. It is also a valuable course for people who do not have experience in dance or a caring profession, but seek to learn more about Dance Movement Psychotherapy. This introductory course is a useful stepping stone for acquiring experience and knowledge before applying for the MSc in Dance Movement Psychotherapy that will offer a full professional qualification.
Completion of the Introductory Course will not entitle participants who complete the course to register or practise as qualified dance movement psychotherapists. Furthermore, the course does not provide therapy. It is an educational experience in the language of movement, dance and group work, all central features of Dance Movement Psychotherapy practice and training. It will open a window onto the key theoretical approaches and practical applications of Dance Movement Psychotherapy.
The programme will be delivered in the form of experiential workshops, group work and seminars. Different approaches to Dance Movement Psychotherapy will be explored and facilitated by visiting lecturers, who will share their specific ways of working and covering a range of populations.
Appropriate studio space for movement work is provided alongside props, music and basic art materials. Participants are encouraged to engage creatively in the movement opportunities offered and experiment with their own movement preferences. Workshops will entail moving and verbal sharing of the movement experience, and students will be encouraged to make links between their movement experiences and relevant theoretical or practical issues. Experienced dance movement psychotherapists will facilitate each workshop. Issues of confidentiality and group boundaries will be clearly defined by the facilitator and the participants.
Students will have access to the Campus Library on a reference only basis.
Semester One:

In this semester the aim will be to offer a broad introduction to the theory and practice of Dance Movement Psychotherapy. Issues of history, important theoretical and practical principles and current applications of these traditions will be explored through talks and workshops. In this semester there will also be opportunities to explore movement/dance within a defined group context.
Semester Two:
Start January (10 two-hour sessions in total)
The focus of the semester will explore further the diverse applications of Dance Movement Psychotherapy and the lecturers will present their work in their specific contexts e.g. mental health, learning disability and specialist services, children in schools and family centres and older people. During the experiential part of the work, emphasis will be placed upon identifying the student’s own movement preferences, exploring different ways of moving and attempting to make links between these experiences and the topics under discussion
This course is the first one in DMP in Scotland. It intends to provide an introduction to this growing
