The 135 club

The founding of the Edinburgh School of Cookery on 9th November 1875 was such a fascinating and remarkable achievement that it has been celebrated throughout the history of QMU and all its predecessor institutions.

Whether the event was commemorated in 1925, 1975 or 2000, there have always been contemporary social problems to address and the original motivation of the two founders, Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson, has been recognised as being as relevant and necessary today as it was in 1875. These two women are remembered with great respect and pride and their sense of moral and social benevolence still lies behind the strategic direction of the University to this day; socially relevant education to improve people’s lives.

At the graduation ceremony at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh on November 10th 2010, a new fundraising campaign, The 135 Club was launched to celebrate the anniversary of the very first lecture held in the Museum of Scotland, just around the corner from the theatre on 9th November 2010. The beneficiaries of all donations to this fund will be the most important people of all, QMU students.

Funding for Higher Education institutions is at a critical level and universities are looking to make savings across the board in resources, staffing etc. but the one area that must remain a priority is the experience of the students themselves.

Many of the students at QMU make huge personal and financial sacrifices to complete their studies and gain a degree. Every effort is made to ensure these cut backs do not impact on the students’ academic and personal experiences and that the quality of the students’ learning, personal development opportunities, activities and support are the very best possible. The university is unable to financially support all areas of student activity, for example attendance at professional conferences, student exchanges, sport so we are asking for help.

On the day, students and members of court joined to launch the club. Three 2nd year students from the BA Costume & Theatre design course created costumes for the occasion, representing a teacher, nurse and cook from 100 years ago.

The Student Union were also very supportive and will be a central part of the fundraising campaign. It was also appropriate that the November 2010 graduating cohort were the first to contribute to the campaign.

How can you join the club?

Donations to this fund are welcomed from all sources and can be made in £1, £3, £5 or multiples of any of these.

All donations to the 135 Club will go towards a general fund ensuring QMU students have the best possible academic and personal experiences while studying at QMU.

If donors would like to support a specific area, there are three options for consideration:

The LRC Book Fund The Student Fund The Vice-Chancellors Fund
