Research Methods

The following stages summarise the research methods:

Experts Advice

Stage 1 - Academic and Industry Experts Input
Experts in the area have been consulted to develop a provisional index of IT applications/systems which are considered to make a substantial contribution to tourism businesses by supporting their different day-to-day operations.

ICT tools

Stage 2 - Tourism Industry Survey
Businesses from the Tourism Industry are being provided with this list of applications - in the form of a survey - to state the IT which their businesses have. This survey is developed in three different sections, one for each of the key sectors of the Scottish tourism industry: the Accommodation, Transport and Visitor Attraction sectors.

Model Development

Stage 3 - Statistical Data Modeling
The results from the previous stage will be statistically treated to provide a snap shot of the ICT available in the different sectors, supporting the development of an assessment model. This model will allow comparing IT capability between different tourism destinations throughout the world.

Destination Managers Validation
Stage 4 - Model Validation
This assessment model is directed to become a Destination Manager Organisation's toolkit. Thus the need for the model to be validated by these organisations. So the final stage of this research will consist on a
survey through tourism destination managers to validate this assessment model.
