Good Scholarship

Key Advice

  • Never take notes from sources by copying out large chunks of the text word for word
  • Always take full reference details of the source from which all your personal notes are taken when reading
  • Always use a range of material to capture and present as wide a range of views as possible about the topic
  • Never write an assignment using just one source
  • Never base an assignment around random, non-authored and non-academic web material that offers no real authority for its views
  • Always identify the strengths and weakness of the ideas presented in terms of the confirmation and support from other authors in the same field, and the quality of the research that produced these ideas
  • Cite and fully reference the source of every idea and quote you use in your work
  • Ensure you adapt the information, ideas and arguments you find in your reading to develop an argument that matches the explicit requirements of the question set for each assignment
